Our Team

Thao Ha, Ph.D.

Director and Principal Investigator

Dr. Ha is a developmental psychologist and the director of the @HEART Lab. Her research explores how emerging technologies (including social media, AI, and VR) reshape adolescent romantic relationships at a time when love is at its most pure and vulnerable, yet profoundly formative in shaping lifelong love, relationship patterns, and mental health. By examining how young people navigate partner choices, relationship dynamics, and breakups within their broader social world, including peers, caregivers, and educators, Dr. Ha identifies key risk and resilience factors that influence well-being. Her work provides critical insights for designing tech-driven solutions, policies, and interventions that foster healthy relationships that flourish in both digital and physical spaces.

Selena Duvall, Ph.D.

Senior Research Scientist

Dr. Selena Duvall is a developmental psychologist and Senior Research Scientist in the HEART Lab. Her program of research addresses how the rapid evolution of virtual spaces—spanning social media, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality—is transforming the landscape of adolescent romance. Blending rigorous academic training with over five years of industry experience in EdTech and technology startups, Dr. Duvall utilizes innovative measurement techniques and advanced quantitative methodologies to capture how young people experience connection, conflict, and intimacy today. Her work connects empirical data to real-world application, guiding the creation of youth-centered technologies, policies, and digital interventions designed to cultivate safe, adaptive, and fulfilling relationships for all adolescents.
